The Vojvodinian Socialdemocrats’ League (LSV) addressed the Ministry of Education with a request that language of the surroundings should be reintroduced in schools as a regular class. The League also demanded that those classes where there are less than 15 pupils and they belong to a minority, should not be closed, since those children have the right for education in their mother tongue.
The LSV reminded that teaching of the language of surroundings gave very good results in the ’70s and ’80s and it largely contributed to the understanding between different ethnic groups in Vojvodina.
The LSV welcomes that the action plan foreseen by the 23. chapter of negotiations on EU-integration a workgroup will be formed to implement the idea that citizens belonging to the majority learn about culture, language and traditions of minority groups.
This makes possible the introduction of classes on language of the surroundings in the school curriculum. The decision about this should not be delayed or postponed till the two referring chapters will be accepted, those who make education policy should start working on this program at once – urges the LSV.
