Minorities make a connection between Hungary and Serbia, the two countries may understand each other better with the help of their minorities – Serbian minority in Hungary and Hungarian minority in Serbia – said Aleksandar Vulin, Serbian minister of social policy, who also added that this way relations between the two countries will improve, as well. Vulin met with the representative of Serbs in Hungary in Subotica.
The Serbian minister said to the RTS that relations of the two countries have been never so good like today, and both counrties implement in practice those things that were agreed upon last year at the common session of the two governments in order to improve the position of both minorities.
Ljubomir Alekszov, representative of the Serbian community in Hungary said that the Hungarian government did significant moves towards improving the position of the Serbian minority in Hungary. Speaking about plans for the future, Alekszov said that Serbs in Hungary would like to have their representative in the Hungarian Parliament and broaden political competencies of the minority self-government in Hungary. They would also like to develop cultural and educational autonomy, since it seems that minority organizations sometimes have to face administrative loads that they cannot handle.
There will be a mixed commission session in April in Subotica, where representatives of the Vojvodina Hungarians will be present, too. Last session of the mixed commission was in Budapest in 2011.
There are about 250 thousand Hungarians in Serbia and about 10 thousand Serbs in Hungary.
